Next week, my latest project, The Tenth Muse, will be performing at Cornelia Street Cafe in NYC on May 20th at 8:30pm. This ensemble balances the ancient with the modern and features composed and improvised chamber music based on the poetic fragments of the Greek lyrist of antiquity, Sappho. More info on the events page. Hope to see you!
TODAY is the release date of SKETCHES Volume Two on Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records. The premise of the collective remains the same: Each member shares a sketch from his musical notebook and another member uses that as the basis for a new composition. Album sampler here.
Pick it up at Bandcamp or iTunes!
SKETCHES, a collective that I’ve been part of for a couple of years, released our first album today! The premise of the group is simple: truly collaborative composition. Before rehearsal each member shares a sketch from his notebook and another member uses that as the basis for a new composition. The band then rehearses and develops the piece further, making each musical choice together in a completely democratic way.
Pick it up here or here! CD releases in Baltimore (tomorrow!), NYC (Thursday), and Boston, Washington DC, and Portland, Maine in January!

I spent the month of August in Wyoming at Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts for my first compositional residency. While there, I wrote a book of music based on poetry by the ancient Greek lyrist, Sappho, whose work almost exclusively survives in fragments. We’ll play some of this new music at the gig.
DOWNBEAT, the “granddaddy of American music magazines”, has reviewed my debut record in the August ’13 issue!
“Worries go straight out the window once the lush, gorgeous sounds of When Flooded start to play…★★★★”
(Brad Farberman, DOWNBEAT)
